Over the past few years, Montreal has quickly become one of my favorite cities in North America. Living in New York, I sometimes find myself missing Europe, but the first time I visited Montreal, it felt like I was transported back to a European city. With its cobblestone streets, stunning architecture, and calming atmosphere, my short stay was a delightful experience. Since then, I’ve made it a tradition to visit Montreal annually, especially during autumn when the foliage is at its peak.

One of the main reasons I love Montreal is the food. The city boasts a diverse culinary scene, and I was fortunate to have a local friend guide me on my first visit. The spots I tried then have become must-visits every time I return. Below, I share my top six places to try in Montreal!

1. St-Viateur Bagels

If I had to choose one reason to return to Montreal, it would be for the bagels. St-Viateur Bagels are something special—and yes, I think they are better than New York-style bagels. Hand-rolled and baked fresh daily, these bagels are warm, light, and have a soft yet crisp texture. While there are many flavours to try, I recommend the best-selling sesame bagel for first-timers. The ‘proper’ way to enjoy them is fresh out of the bag, but feel free to add a side of cream cheese. St-Viateur has multiple locations in Montreal, so make sure to stop by—and bring cash, as it’s cash-only!

2. Au Pied du Cochon

This restaurant never disappoints. If you’re craving traditional Quebecois food, Au Pied du Cochon is a must on your itinerary. The restaurant’s name translates to “duck in a can,” which is fitting since their signature and most famous dish is literally cooked in a can!

My other top recommendations include:

  • Foie gras nigiri—it melts in your mouth and is the perfect start to your meal!

  • Duck temaki: duck tartare with spicy mayo, crispy nori, and served with a quail egg on top!

Au Pied du Cochon is usually booked out, so I suggest reserving a spot as soon as bookings open, typically two weeks in advance. Personally, I love sitting at the bar stools, where you can watch the chefs in action!

3. Drogheria Fine Gnocchi
This gnocchi spot is addictive—really addictive. I wasn’t the biggest gnocchi fan until I tried this place. Perfect for a quick lunch, this gnocchi is perfectly cooked, coated in a rich tomato sauce, and topped with chili flakes and cheese. During peak times, the queues can get long, but it’s definitely worth the wait. It’s another cash-only spot with super friendly staff and perfect for those looking for a budget-friendly yet delicious lunch!

4.Kougn Amann Bakery

Calling all patisserie lovers and those with a sweet tooth—Kouign Amann Bakery is a must-visit. This quintessential French patisserie in Montreal will transport you straight to France with the rich aroma of freshly baked pastries. Famous for its Kouign Amann—a sweet Breton cake made with bread dough and layers of butter and sugar—this scrumptious pastry is worth every calorie. The bakery can get quite busy, and during my first visit, the friendly baker informed me that the next batch was still in the oven and would be ready in 30 minutes. He took my name and order, and when I returned, each bite of the flaky, buttery pastry was sensational. This bakery is open Wednesday to Saturday, so plan your visit accordingly!

5. La Belle Tonki

I’m always skeptical when it comes to fusion dining spots—sometimes they can be done well, but sometimes the original cuisine just can’t be beaten. However, during my most recent visit to Montreal, I was highly impressed when I ventured to La Belle Tonki—a Cambodian and Vietnamese fusion restaurant with a twist on traditional Quebecois food. The menu showcases a wide range of dishes and boasts my favorite eating style—plates to share. From kimchi-topped poutine to cheesy ramen and pandan crème brûlée, this Asian-infused menu is a proper delight. All the dishes are full of flavor and spice, and we left extremely happy and full
