San Juan La Laguna is located on the southwestern corner of Lake Atitlán. It is easily accessible from the main town of Panajachel by lancha (boat), which takes approximately 30–40 minutes and costs 25Q. If you're coming from neighboring towns such as San Pablo or San Pedro, the fare is 15Q. For short distances, you also have the option of taking a tuk-tuk.
Known for its rich arts and culture, as well as being home to the Tz’utujil Maya people, San Juan La Laguna offers an authentic atmosphere and is a fantastic place to spend a few nights. We stayed for three nights and were pleasantly surprised by everything the town had to offer.
From authentic Mayan art, weaving, and crafts to honey farms, coffee plantations, and vibrant street art, we fully immersed ourselves in the town’s culture. Below I share my top 5 recommendations when visiting this beautiful town!
1. El Cerro de la Cruz
This short but rewarding climb offers stunning panoramic views of the lake. Also known as Mirador Kiaq’ Aiswaan, you can access the viewpoint via the path leading up to Rostro Maya (Indian Nose). There is a 30Q entrance fee for tourists.
At the top, you'll find a resting area where you can grab some food, or you can continue to the end, where a large cross stands on the viewing deck. Despite being a short hike, I highly recommend it—the views over the lake are absolutely breathtaking!

2. Eat at Deleite Ancestral Experience
This was, without a doubt, my favourite meal of the entire trip. If you know me, you know I'm always seeking authentic local experiences (ideally on a budget), and Deleite Ancestral Experience – Gastronomic Tz’utujil exceeded all expectations.
A family-run restaurant led by Esmeralda and her family, this spot offers the best of traditional Mayan flavors. Not only was the food exceptional, but the restaurant itself was a visual delight—designed in the shape of a clay pot, it was both distinctive and beautiful. It is best to reserve in advance by WhatsApp, where Esmeralda will kindly share availability and meal options for you to chose from!

3. Roam the Colourful Streets!
San Juan La Laguna is a vibrant and colourful town, and you simply cannot miss wandering through its rainbow-painted streets. If you arrive by boat, you'll step right onto La Calle de las Sombrillas ("The Street of Umbrellas"). Walk a little further, and you'll find La Calle de los Sombreros, a lively street filled with beautiful street art and colourful hanging hats.

4. Visit and support a women-own Weaving collective!
San Juan La Laguna is home to many weaving schools, offering authentic handwoven gifts and clothing for purchase. The women of this town are incredibly skilled, creating stunning textiles that make for unique gifts and souvenirs.
Beyond shopping, it’s fascinating to learn about the intricate process behind these traditional garments. We visited Casa Flor Ixcaco, where we took a tour and learned about the natural dyeing process and the sheer amount of time and craftsmanship required to create each piece.

5.Enjoy Some Wine and Cheese at El Artesano Quest y Vino
Okay, this is another food recommendation, but it’s the perfect pairing if you decide to climb up to El Cerro de la Cruz. This hidden gem offers delicious cheese and charcuterie boards, and the chef will gladly suggest wine pairings if you're interested! It was the ideal spot for a light lunch after our hike. I recommend reserving in advance via WhatsApp!
